This is a question that I created with my mentor teacher after reflecting on how my last week of lessons went.
Question: Think of a lesson you have taught in the past week or two. Tell me about one specific thing you observed during that lesson that drove your next instruction.

One thing that I observed from a lesson that I taught recently was the need to review the information that was being taught. I knew that the students were slightly grasping the concept that was presented to them but I saw that they needed a little bit more. I decied that I would talk with them the next day about what we had done. I did not want to take time away from the lesson so I conducted the reviewing on a more informal basis. During table/center time, I went around to each student to ask some questions and show pictures from the previous day’s lesson. The data that I got from doing this showed me that they were retaining the information which made me feel proud. This process is something that I will continue to do with my students.

Gooood question!! And Tarah has answered well— used a real life example and showed that you can be flexible during the lesson….

I taught a lesson this past week that introduced the topic of the Solar System to my students. I knew going into the nit that the Solar System is a very abstract topic. We started by reading about the Solar System in an adapted packet. The students did no seem to grasp any of the information they had read when I asked questions at the end. For the next lesson, I decided to use a very plain promethean board activity to show pictures or objects, tell the names of different things, and introduce the bigger picture. I observed the students during the activity being engaged and excited about the material. Also, students were able to answer the questions that i presented them with. Based on my observation of the difference in engagement and interest between the two lessons, I will be likely in the future to start a Unit with an interactive PowerPoint or Promethean Board activity.
